Maintenance guides and usage instructions to keep your mills performing at their best.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fill my mill?
Remove the rubber bung (top), fill with dry salt crystals or whole peppercorns, then refit securely. Use our stainless steel filling funnel for convenience.
Do not overfill — leaving a small amount of space allows the mechanism to operate smoothly.
How do I adjust the grind size?
All of our mills have a coarseness adjustment knob on the underside of the mill (centre).
- Tighten (clockwise) for a finer grind
- Loosen (anti-clockwise) for a coarser grind
Make small adjustments and test until you find your preferred setting.
What type of salt and pepper should I use?
For best performance and longevity:
- Use dry salt crystals (avoid wet or brined salts)
- Use whole peppercorns (black, white, green, or mixed)
Using damp or flavoured salts may affect grinding performance over time.
How should I clean my mill?
Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth.
Do not submerge your mill in water or place it in a dishwasher.
If needed, empty the mill and gently brush out any residue using a dry cloth or soft brush.
Can my mill be used near heat or steam?
We recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to direct heat, steam, or moisture (e.g. next to a boiling hob).
Storing your mill in a dry location will help preserve both the finish and the internal mechanism.
Why is my mill not grinding properly?
Common causes include:
- The grind adjustment being too tight or too loose
- Using damp salt or oversized peppercorns
- The mill being overfilled
- The grub screw on the rear of the handle may need to be re-tightened using a standard 2 mm Allen key.
Try emptying the mill, checking the adjustment, and refilling with dry contents.
Do I need to season or prime the grinder?
No special seasoning is required. On first use, you may need a few turns to draw the salt or pepper into the grinding mechanism.
How should I store my mill?
Store your mill upright in a dry environment, away from excess humidity.
If storing for long periods, consider emptying the contents to avoid moisture buildup.
What should I do if something doesn’t feel right?
If the mill feels unusually stiff, loose, or stops grinding, stop using it and check the adjustment and contents.
